Freelance Legal Translators, Transcribers, and Interpreters
Location and employment:
- Translation and transcription are remote. Interpreting may be remote or onsite in Washington, DC; New York City, NY; Miami, FL; Houston, TX; Dallas, TX; or San Francisco, CA.
- Freelance contractor position. Applicants must be U.S. citizens residing in the U.S.; dual citizenship is permitted.
- Reports to the Project Manager.
Pay:
- $0.10 - $0.20 per word of translation.
Languages:
- Translate, transcribe, or interpret between English and one or more of Greek, Indonesian, Japanese, Italian, Lithuanian, Portuguese, or Romanian.
Responsibilities:
- Translate documents involving law enforcement and legal subjects accurately, following designated style and quality standards and using domain-specific terminology.
- Transcribe audio files and translate them into the target language.
- Review the quality of other translators’ work as needed.
- Interpret accurately, preserving tone and register and following the code of ethics.
- Communicate fluently in spoken and written English.
Required qualifications:
- Proficiency in translation and interpreting between English and a foreign language, plus experience in audio transcription.
- Experience as a professional translator, editor, transcriber, interpreter, journalist, writer, or legal professional.
- Familiarity with legal terminology; proficiency in Microsoft Office; willingness to undergo a U.S. government background check.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
Preferred qualifications:
- Law degree, paralegal certificate, or court interpreting experience.
- Experience with editing, audio transcription, or interpreting; security clearance.
