About the Role

Produce 16–20 quick-turn local news stories each day for sites in California. Use AI tools to help draft stories while applying independent news judgment, fact-checking and editorial review. This is a fully remote role for 25 hours per week at $25 per hour.

Responsibilities
- Identify and research newsworthy stories from government agencies, municipalities, businesses, schools, nonprofits, public meetings and community organizations.
- Monitor social media, local websites, newsletters and public records for original story ideas and community trends.
- Draft and publish accurate, engaging stories and write SEO-friendly headlines.
- Verify facts and edit stories for editorial standards, AP Style, clarity, grammar and accuracy.

Requirements
- Experience writing for digital media, student publications, local news organizations or similar outlets.
- Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills, with an understanding of AP Style.
- Strong news judgment and the ability to develop story ideas independently.
- Comfort using AI tools in an editorial workflow and social media for newsgathering.
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines and learn new publishing tools and workflows.
